Capitol of Texas Park, a walk through the birth of Texas

What is Capitol of Texas Park?

Selection of Columbia marker

Columbia is selected as the site for the first capitol. Capitol of Texas Park is a unique park dedicated to a unique period in history - the Republic of Texas.

The park incorporates the very spot where much of early Texas history took place, the site of the Republic's first capitol building.

The park includes a walking path with 21 stations, each consisting of a black granite monument depicting the people and events of the early Republic, and a central plaza which is representative of the Seal of the Republic.

Another historic addition to the park came with the discovery of a cistern during construction. Archaeologists studying the site believe it to date from the 1830s, and local historians believe it may have provided water for the capitol.
