History abounds in West Columbia known as the First Capitol of the Republic of Texas, where Sam Houston was sworn in as the first President of the Republic and where Stephen F. Austin, the Father of Texas, died. Come visit where Texas history all began with a replica of the First Capitol building, the Columbia Historic Museum, Columbia Rosenwald School, the Varner Hogg Plantation on FM 2852 operated by the Texas Historic Commission, Capitol of Texas Park-a walk through the Birth of Texas and beautiful historic homes in nearby East Columbia. Over twenty historical markers offer visitors many sites to visit and explore.
